How to Repair Drywall for Beginners

We’ll start with a quick explanation of what drywall actually is (spoiler: it’s not as tough as concrete and it is meant to be repaired), and then jump into the step-by-step process for each type of hole. You'll learn:

  • What tools you need for each repair
  • The difference between spackling paste and drywall mud
  • How to prep, patch, and sand for a smooth finish
  • Why “thin peanut butter” is better than “chunky peanut butter” (trust me, this’ll make sense!)

I cover everything from nail pops and small dings, all the way up to large holes you can see through — and how to patch them properly using mesh tape, backing boards, and compound.

The techniques I show are simple, repeatable, and beginner-friendly. If you can spread peanut butter on toast, you can patch a wall. Plus, I’ve included timestamps in the video if you want to skip to a specific repair size.
